Rosacea can be caused by genetics and is triggered by environmental factors such as emotional stress, spicy food, hot drinks, alcohol consumption, temperature changes, sport, sun exposure or irritant cosmetics.

Several biological dysfunctions are implicated in rosacea: abnormalities in the skin's natural defense system, an excessive nervous response and a damaged and weakened barrier. This causes visible symptoms such as temporary flushing or persistent redness and small visible blood vessels. In the most severe cases, it can cause pimples (the same as in acne), thickening of the skin around the nose and eye symptoms (dryness, inflammation, small visible blood vessels). It also causes non-visible symptoms, such as unpleasant or painful tingling, burning sensations, tightness, itching and dryness of the skin.
